No Vaccinations, No School

8-19-04 - AUSTIN (AP) Texas students are being turned away from school for not having their immunizations as required under a new state rule.

Some six thousand children in Austin were turned away on the first day of classes Tuesday. In Dallas, school officials estimate that hundreds of students were turned away because they didn't have their required shots.

It's part of a new rule from the Texas Department of Health. In previous years, students had 30 days from the start of school to get immunized.

Parents who opt for vaccinations will need to show proof that they've scheduled a doctor's appointment to enroll in school. Parents who don't want their children immunized can get waivers from the health department.
