8-19-04 - OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Supporters and opponents of a statewide lottery squared off at a meeting of mayors from across Oklahoma. State finance director and lottery supporter Scott Meacham says critics of the lottery haven't offered any other plan to raise money for education.

Lottery opponent and state Representative Forrest Claunch says a lottery will destroy families and lead to increases in crime.

The mayors are attending an Oklahoma Municipal League Conference in Oklahoma City.

Voters will decide in November whether to approve the lottery and a companion question that dedicates money raised from the lottery to education.
