JOY, OK - The Murray County Sheriff's Office says the tornado touched down just before 9 p.m. Wednesday night in Joy about five miles north of Davis, and while many residents say they were prepared for the storm, they were shocked by how much damage was done.
Mickey Blankenship and her husband were in a nearby storm cellar when the tornado touched down on Joy Road, and says when they returned, the front of their house was gone.
"It always seems to kind of by passed us previously, but this time we knew that it wasn't going to be bypassed, and it was quite a scary thought, but we're alive. That's what counts the most," Blankenship says.
"We had an entire closed in front porch. That is completely gone. It took off the roof with it, blew all the glass on the outer and inner windows, so we have glass all in our home," she says.
Murray County Sheriff Darin Rogers says more than 15 structures have reported some damage, including two homes and a lumber warehouse at N-Joy Home Building, and a stable that houses dozens of horses.
"Right now we've got several barns with the roofs blown off, some blown in. We've got several houses with roof damage and some structural damage to them," Rogers says.
Cleanup crews spent most of the night and Thursday morning clearing trees and down power lines from the road. Rogers says most of the power has been restored to the area, and now the focus is on helping residents rebuild.
"We're just trying to make sure that the citizens out here, we get them some help, whatever they need. We're trying to get their properties taken care of, their houses fixed back, just whatever they need," the sheriff says.
Blankenship says although it will take time she plans to eventually put everything back together.
"We'll put it back just the best that we can and taking care of all the things that we're supposed to and we'll have it back."
The American Red Cross and the Oklahoma Office of Emergency Management visited Joy today to conduct a preliminary damage assessment. Officials say it may take days before they know the extent of the damage in the area. If you have any damage from Wednesday night's storms you can report it to the Murray County Sheriff's Office.
