DENISON TX--The Housing and economic recovery act of 2008 was big news that summer, and while many people may have already forgotten about it, the funds provided by congress have finally made their way to Texoma, and soon they could actually start doing some good.
Mayor Robert Brady says one of his main goals when he came into office was to do something about the abandoned and broken down houses all over the city of Denison. For the past few years the city has been buying and demolishing these unsafe structures. Last year, 25 homes were leveled.
"Every time we get rid of one of those properties we create a vacant lot," said Mayor Brady.
Now an organization armed with federal dollars is stepping in to take those empty lots and put them to use.
"Our goal is to take these vacant lots and build homes for our applicants throughout the summer, they will be modest but will provide honest affordable housing in Grayson County,” said Guy Burgoon, the program administrator for the Texoma Housing Finance Corporation.
Burgoon says the two million dollars coming to Grayson County is a small piece of a very large pie.
"Congress appropriated $3.92 billion for state and local governments to acquire abandoned and foreclosed properties," said Burgoon
While THFC will acquire lots in other parts of Grayson County, the fact that Denison already has several lots they are willing to part with makes building in Denison that much easier.
"It is the perfect storm if you will, all of these things coming together to create a great opportunity,” said Burgoon.
