SHERMAN TX--Registered sex offenders must meet several criteria when living within most city limits, but in Grayson County it's a different story.
"That’s right, here in Grayson County we don't have any regulations as of now," said SGT. Ricky Wheeler with the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office.
That means that outside of city limits, a registered sex offender can live anywhere in Grayson County, which includes near parks and daycare centers; but that freedom could soon be a thing of the past.
"We have been in the process for the past few months as to making regulations as to where they can and cannot live, like near parks and places where children gather," said Wheeler.
Those laws would bring the county in line with cities like Sherman and Denison, where registered sex offenders are restricted from living near schools, parks, playing fields, daycares and even public libraries, but some city residents still have concerns.
Heather Morris, a Sherman resident, recently received a letter informing her that a sex offender lived less than three blocks from her and her children.
Morris says she understands that sex offenders are allowed to live in her neighborhood, because it isn't in a restricted area, but she still takes extra precautions.
Areas around schools and playgrounds outside of incorporated cities in Grayson County may soon be off limits to registered sex offenders as well.
"We hope to have it to county commissioners before the end of summer," said Wheeler.
