Madill, OK -- A police officer is recovering after being assaulted at the National Sand Bass Festival. Now at least two people area under arrest for their part in the crime.
The Madill Police Department is not releasing the name of the officer injured, but we're told the man has been released from the hospital and is expected to be okay.
Our messages to the Police Chief have not been returned, but other Marshall County authorities tell us it started as a fight between a group of teens and young adults, and ended with a Madill officer being attacked.
Authorities say three arrests were made Monday night. But this is the only adult arrested - so it's the only name and picture being released. Authorities say Jonathan Lofton, 24, remains in the Marshall County jail, facing charges of public intoxication.
Authorities say the fight started about 9 o'clock Monday night, around the midway section of the Sand Bass Festival.
Officials say as officers tried to break up the fight, one teen began swinging at an officer, and somehow the officer was knocked down onto the concrete, breaking his leg.
Authorities tell us the 17-year-old accused of attacking the officer remains under arrest for two counts of assault and battery on a police officer, along with assault with a deadly weapon, because he was reportedly using brass knuckles
Festival organizers say this is the first time anything like this has happened at the Sand Bass Festival.
"It's a good place to come to enjoy the day with your family. You don't have to worry anything about that. That was just an isolated incident - a couple of idiots come and want and act like idiots - but luckily the cops handled it well," vendor Bryan Corbone said.
Authorities tell us the teen accused of attacking the officer is being held at a juvenile detention center. Officials say the other teen arrested is accused of obstruction of justice but has been released to his parents.
Festival organizers say security at the Sand Bass Festival is operated by the Madill Police Department and is being ramped up to keep something like Monday's incident from happening again.
