Authorities say some female inmates at the Pittsburg County Jail had to be moved when wind-driven rain caused damage at the Pittsburg County Jail.

Sheriff Joel Kerns says winds forced rainwater into a section of the jail Monday night. Kerns says that water got into some light fixtures in an area where female prisoners are held, caused the fixtures to smoke and activated the sprinkler system.

He says as a result, eight of the prisoners were moved from a lockdown area to a general female population area. Elsewhere in McAlester, the storm caused major roof damage to Jefferson Early Childhood Center. McAlester Public Schools custodian Ron Peloquin says wind peeled back part of the roof, allowing water to fall into the building.
