SHERMAN TX--While many teens are spending their summer watching television or playing video games, one group of young people is learning to be leaders, and they're finding out, in order to lead, you must also be willing to serve those around you.
Kids washing cars is not an unusual sight around Texoma. What is out of the ordinary is why these kids are braving the summer heat.
"It is a camp for young people to come and participate and learn what it means to become a leader," said Minerva Paredes of the United way.
The Camp is sponsored by Grayson County College and has a unique name.
"It is Viking leaders, Vikings on a roll," explained future leader, Jordan Crisp.
After two days of seminars, learning about college, the importance of a good work ethic and how to make good decisions, these future leaders decided to roll up their sleeves this morning for a good cause.
"We are trying to raise money for a man that is in a wheel chair and he cannot go home until a ramp is built," said Nathaniel Hernandez.
Students decided to hold a yard sale and car wash to help raise the funds needed to build a wheelchair ramp, and despite the heat these students are happy to help.
"When I found out it was a guy in a wheelchair, it reminded me when my dad had a wreck and was in a wheelchair, so I wanted to help" said Crisp.
The students say, this act of service is just the first step in becoming a true leader.
"This is very important to me, it is teaching me a lot about leadership," said Hernandez.
The event was held at the Grayson County united Way, and they say they were more than happy to help.
"They are future leaders so we wanted to help them as much as we can," said Paredes.
