SHERMAN, TX -- A spinal cord injury can happen in a split second, but affect someone for the rest of their life. Now one Sherman man paralyzed on the football field, is hoping to help other people living with spinal cord injuries by starting a support group. Shelby Levins Reports.
Trenell Walker is a friendly and familiar face in Texoma. And while his limitations are obvious to some, that's not what he focuses on.
“Initially they're captivated by the chair but once I open my mouth to speak and them let them know whats on the inside, I’m told they don't even see what's on the outside any more,” Trenell explained.
It was a routine tackle on the football filed back in 1995 –
"I remember it perfectly, going for the tackle, the next thing I know, I'm laying on my left side not able to move,” Trenell said.
He was left paralyzed from the neck down. The next few years were his most difficult.
"I went through bargaining with god and the devil and depression for three years,” he said.
But Trenell isn't focused on the past either. He's achieved his dream of earning a master’s degree. And now he offers resources and counseling to those who seem to have lost faith in the possibility of recovery.
“Seeing the ray of hope in their eyes and giving hope to the hopeless - that's my passion,” Trenell said.
But Trenell wants to do more, he's want to start a support group for others living with spinal cord injuries and plans to call it “Fly high with with SCI.
"Because we're flying high regardless of where we're sitting down, we soaring like eagles to do our best to shoot toward our goals and dreams,” Trenell said.
Trenell hopes to help people across Texoma, while he continues to show limitations should not be a focus.
“Focus on great expectation - knowing that anything the mind can conceive or believe it can achieve,” Trenell said.
If you would like to Join Trenell's support group, or know someone else that could benefit from the group – Trenell can be reached by phone – 903-532-5656 – or email – twalker@angels of care.com.
