LEONARD, TX -- For the second time this year several animals were seized by the SPCA Friday morning in Leonard, TX. While the SPCA focuses on the health and well being of animals, Friday's seizure of several dogs and cats may also have a significant impact on the health of the owner.
When SPCA rescue team members entered this house in Leonard Friday morning, they say they were taken aback by what they found inside.
"The smell was overwhelming, there was feces and urine everywhere," said Lacy Ball, with the SPCA.
Workers say animals were living inside the home with no signs of food or water dishes. So, for their welfare, they were seized.
"Seven dogs and five cats."
The animals will now be taken to a facility in McKinney where they will be bathed and treated by veterinarians.
"Many of them were very underweight, the puppies were just covered in fleas, so they will need medical attention right away," Ball said.
While these animals will get treatment, other pets found in the home were not as fortunate.
"We did find some animals wrapped up in blankets in the freezer, I believe it was two dogs and four cats," Ball said.
Fannin County District Attorney Richard Glaser was at the seizure this morning. He says due to the nature of the neglect, perhaps the animals aren't the only ones who may need assistance in this case.
"My office is here to make sure that the person involved is also well cared for, so we have called in adult protective services and MHMR," Glaser said.
While there have been several animal seizures in Fannin County in the past year Glaser says that every case is different, and in this case the investigation is ongoing.
