DENISON, TX – Rain over the holiday weekend put a damper on celebrations. Not only were fireworks in question, especially on Saturday, but campers and boaters were really the ones hit hard.
Park managers at Eisenhower State Park in Denison said they felt the effects of the rain over the July 4th weekend. Park Assistant Manager Richard Kellog said most RV’s were able to stick it out through the rain, but others in tents or shelters did not.
"We weren't quite as busy as we've been in the past, the rains kind of kept everybody at home on Friday and Saturday,” said Kellog.
And when campsites are empty, that means less money going back to the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife. Kellog said on a big holiday weekend they prepare overflow campsites, but this year they weren’t really needed.
"We'll feel some of it, like I say Sunday really came out and probably helped out the weekend a lot,” said Kellog.
And though fewer people came out for the whole weekend, there were still a lot of families that made it to the lake for the day on Sunday and also on Monday by just getting a day pass.
"My favorite part is being with family and friends and being in the lake because it's so cool and jumping off rocks and everything,” said 12 year old Cesar Siorda.
Cesar’s family took advantage of one last day off, traveling from Plano to enjoy the fireworks last night and the park during the day on Monday. They had a picnic, swam in the lake and played soccer at the day-sites.
"It's a busy day and this is like sometimes our only time to come and hang out in the lake,” said Siorda.
The rain also didn't stop fireworks, as park officers issued several citations for illegal fireworks and alcohol in the park. Kellog said after the holiday is over and most people pack up it's time to start the clean up process to get ready for the next weekend. He hopes they will have more business with better weather.
