SHERMAN, TX - Holiday traffic could also be the culprit for drivers attempting to exit Highway 75 illegally Monday.
As traffic built up near the Fallon Drive bridge. Many impatient drivers took off on dirt paths to get to the service road. But Sherman Police officers were waiting to ticket people.
Several officers arrived at 10:30 Monday morning, and in just a couple of hours each one had issued nearly 50 tickets.
Police estimate each ticket costs about $177 dollars.
"The backup's not that long, it's only about a quarter of a mile but they get impatient and once they exit off here they can't get back on the highway and it slows them down more because the onramps are closed off due to construction. It's actually a faster route if they stay on the highway," said Sherman Police Officer Jeff Jones.
Police say not only is driving through the grass illegal, but also dangerous for drivers on the service roads.
