HUGO, OK – Mike Rabon is a rock and roll artist from Hugo, that’s known for his hits from the 60's. Rabon was the founding member of the group - The Five Americans. But now he's hoping to take the talents he used to spin records, to turn pages.
The strum of a guitar just came naturally for Mike Rabon. He taught himself how to play, along with a handful of band mates.
Rabon got his start playing at a local radio station and went on to lead the chart-topping group - The Five Americans. It was everything he ever dreamed of.
"First was to play the guitar, play in a band, then to achieve the un-achievable -- to get a hit record. I thought about it day and night - it's all I thought about from 12 years on,” Rabon said.
Rabon co-wrote one of the group's best-known songs – “Western Union.”
The song - about a “Dear John” letter sent via telegraph - played more than 1-million times on the radio in 1967, and made the group rock stars.
"We got the red carpet treatment, we had our own airplane and our own roadies, all we had to do was pick up our guitars and play,” Rabon said.
Group members eventually went their separate ways after 1969.
"I fulfilled my dream; I did what I wanted to do. It was time to let it go,” Rabon explained.
But Rabon hasn't let go of his passion for writing. Now Instead of song lyrics, he's writing prose.
"Now that I'm not in a band, writing book was just the next natural thing,” Rabon said.
Rabon released his first novel "Billy Don Basic and Me" in June.
The novel is part autobiographical, part fiction and based on his time in basic training.
But just like with his music, Rabon wants to be remembered for touching people's lives.
"This story was dear to me because I love all our men in uniform and I have love for the military. It's a very touching story," Rabon said.
Rabon says he's already starting on his next novel - which he says is will detail the true story of "The Five Americans."
