8-31-04 - A major construction project on I-35 in southern Oklahoma is finished in time for Labor Day weekend. Western Plains Construction Company has finished enough work that all four lanes have permanently opened from Marietta south to Thackerville.
The Love County project cost $5.5 million and began in February 2004. The work narrowed both directions of I-35 to one lane for about four miles between mile markers 11 and 7.
Drivers are cautioned that contractors will still be working in the area through September to finalize smaller details of the project such as laying sod.
Future improvements in the area include a seven-mile project beginning at the Texas state line and another project in Carter County beginning at the Love/Carter County line, extending north seven miles. The projects are scheduled for bidding in late 2004 and early 2005.
