SHERMAN, TX - A woman driving through a well-known spot in Sherman, where the railroad bridge crosses Harrison Avenue, had a startling accident last Friday. And she said it wasn't her fault.
"As I was crossing under the bridge, just a huge crash into my window and glass just flew everywhere,” said Tracy Mouser.
Tracy was driving north on Harrison Avenue and when she crossed under the bridge, she smashed into the height indicator sign for the railroad bridge. One end had come loose and it was hanging vertically on the right side of the street.
"The officer said it was an obstruction in the road and it's my duty as a driver to watch for something like that in the road, it was not in the road it was dangling in the sky,” said Mouser.
And while the police were filling out a report for her accident, another SUV hit the pole as well, knocking off its side mirror.
"It very much could have been prevented especially since when officers were taking my report another car came by and smacked it. Hazardous things… I mean block them off, take care of it,” said Mouser.
Mouser said she wants someone to take responsibility, and look at better securing the poles.
"I just want the city to take care of my car and more than anything, because of the location of this hazard being by Sherman high school with young drivers, I want them to make it safer,” said Mouser.
Jeff Miller, with Sherman Public Works, admitted that any street signs are the responsibility of the city, not the railroad company. And he thinks that another vehicle that was too tall to fit under the bridge might have hit those warning poles, causing it to break.
But he isn’t sure, and the pole that broke was on the right side of the northbound lane, which would indicate the vehicle would have already passed under the bridge.
"What angered me was to find out that the pole had been reported to the police station prior to me hitting it that day and that the obstruction was not secured, it was not barricaded off, it was not taken down,” said Mouser.
She says it could have been much worse.
"If any of my children had been with me they would have had a face full of glass,” she said.
Mouser said the total damage to her vehicle was about $1,600. Miller said she can turn in a claim to the City Works Department, and they will investigate the claim and see if they are responsible for any of the damage.
