LEONARD, TX-- In the community of Leonard, Texas, the annual summer celebration known as the Leonard Picnic has been going on for more than 130 years. Each year has a unique theme, and residents celebrated this weekend with a little touch of Hollywood.
"I can’t say a bad thing about this town. There wasn't one person, that wasn't generous, and kind and sweet to us. We just thank Leonard for opening their arms to us," actor, Todd Terry, said.
Terry, along with his on-screen daughter, Cherami Leigh, returned for the Leonard celebration, to enjoy the small town feel they were part of, during their three weeks of filming.
"It's a great area of Texas, and this totally I think is a positive, great environment, really represents Texas really well, so I think it's the perfect place to shoot," Cherami Leigh, said.
‘Beyond the Farthest Star’ is a feature length film, currently in its post editing phase that was shot throughout Leonard, Texas, this past spring.
Chamber members were so pleased with the feedback from residents surrounding the filming, they decided to use the movie as the focus for their annual celebration.
"The great thing about a small community like this, is that everybody just came out to help," Terry, said.
Longtime Leonard residents say, incorporating the film into the picnic was like putting a new twist on an old classic, and as times change, they're happy to see that the long running festival still has special meaning for many locals.
"The longer it runs, the harder it is to keep it going, because of all the competition you have now, with Six Flags and Hurricane Harbor, Ranger games and this and that. It used to be, this was the thing to do, but now it's harder so it is more about the memories, and the traditions, and just loving Leonard, and wanting to do what we've always done; keep the tradition alive," Chamber member and longtime Leonard resident, Angela Sadler, said.
