The fire broke out in the 200 block of South Lyons Street in Tom Bean, around 1 o'clock Saturday afternoon.

Police from Tom Bean and Whitewright were first on scene. Officers say they had to force the woman to leave the residence. Those officers were able to save a few of the woman’s birds and her pet cat.

The two officers received treatment for smoke inhalation on the scene.

Firefighters say there were able to save the other pet birds inside. And had to give a couple of the animals oxygen.

Firefighters from Tom Bean, Van Alstyne, Howe, Whitewright and Sherman all worked to put out the flames. Firefighters say they eventually had to fight the fire defensively.

Firefighters say the flames demolished the roof. They say the brick house maybe a total loss, valued at more than $100,000.
