MARSHALL COUNTY, OK - A dangerous intersection in Marshall County has caught the attention of the director of the Oklahoma Department of Transportation. He met with residents and county leaders Thursday to talk about what changes need to be made. Dara Downs has more from Marshall County.

At first glance the intersection of Highway 32 and Highway 99 and 377 looks like many others in the state, but residents say since it opened in the early 1960's, 22 people have died in car accidents at that intersection. Now they're hoping some changes will be made to help save lives.

Star Sanders says her son, Jason, his finance, and her two year old son were killed at the intersection in an accident last year.

"The semi truck was going so fast and hit them so hard that there wasn't enough left of him to be buried or kissed goodbye or put a suit on him. We had to have a closed casket," Sanders says,

Sanders and other members of the Marshall County Transportation Committee attended a meeting with the state director of transportation, Gary Ridley, to see what can be done to make the intersection safer.

"Statistically we'd looked at it we looked at the number of accidents, fatalities, those type issues, but until you look at it firsthand you really can't get a feel if there is anything we can do," Ridley says.

Right now traffic traveling east or west on Highway 32 is supposed to stop at the intersection, marked by stop signs and flashing red lights. But traffic on Highway 99 and 377 doesn't have to stop or even slow down from 65 miles an hour to go through the intersection.

Sanders says she would like to see the speed limit lowered and more signs put up.

"Either a four way flashing red light and four way stop signs, because it's not if it will happen again, it's when."

State Representative Sam Buck says he hopes by actually bringing Director Ridley to the source of the problem, more will be done to get it resolved.

"I'm hoping that together will allow us to possibly help us put more traffic control signs up, whether that be stop lights or stop signs or reduce the speed," Buck says.

Sanders says while changing the intersection won't make up for her loss, she wants to make sure no one else has to suffer the loss of a loved one.

"We just don't want anyone else to have to go through what we have gone through, and what 22 other families or 22 people who have died, their families left behind have gone through."

Director Ridley also visited the intersection of Highway 177 and Highway 199 in Dickson in Carter County because of similar complaints. He says he will take the information he received today and see what changes can be made to make both of the intersections safer.
