9-06-04 - WASHINGTON (AP) There's an appropriate survey to talk about this Labor Day. An Associated Press poll finds that most Americans are very satisfied with their jobs. Most say work is an important part of who they are. Those most likely to feel that way were white, married, college-educated, homeowners and Republicans.
The president of the AFL CIO, John Sweeney, says the latest government statistics indicate working Americans are worse off than they were four years ago. Organized labor is seizing on the numbers in trying to boost pro-labor candidates in the November election.
Many workers in the AP poll say they worry about the increasing job stress, health care and retirement benefits.
The poll of 589 workers was taken in mid-August and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus four percentage points.
