SHERMAN, TX -- The Sherman city budget could be taking a $10 million cut, and some of that could possibly be made up with a water and trash rate hike to residents.

The Sherman City Council was handed a first draft of the budget for the next fiscal year at Monday’s city council meeting.

While no official action was taken, city staff says they expect the council to approve the budget, with several cuts to capital expenditures.

But they're also suggesting an increase in sewage and trash rates to make up for the loss of $2 million in revenue when Folgers and MEMC close in 2010.

The city is suggesting a 6% increase to water rates. And a 2.5% increase to trash rates. That equals about a $4.25 increase on a bill of $50.00.

City officials say they are not proposing any property tax increase.

A public hearing is expected to be scheduled at the next city council meeting on August 16th, to allow residents to ask questions about the budget proposal.
