DENISON, TX - The Denison City Council has voted to move forward in the process of demolishing a longtime downtown business. Wright's Drive-In on South Mirick has been added to the list of Denison structures that are unsafe and are scheduled to be torn down.

Under normal circumstances liens are placed against the owners of commercial properties that have been condemned, but since the building and the properties have different owners the council voted to pay for the demolition out of the city's general fund.

Community development director Tom Speakman says taking down the dangerous structure helps keep residents safe.

"The basic idea behind the demolition program is to provide safe neighborhoods, and as we progressed through the years doing that then we found there was a need to improve the gateways into town," Speakman said.

Wright's, which has been closed for several years, is scheduled to be torn down before the end of the year.
