Five Soldiers Killed in Iraq

9-07-04 - BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) The American military says since mid-day Monday, five soldiers have been killed in Iraq. One of the latest fatalities occurred in a Baghdad slum where American troops clashed with followers of a radical cleric.

In all, at least 34 people have been killed and about 200 are wounded in the battles in the Baghdad slum.

The US military says troops came under fire during a routine patrol.

An aide to al-Sadr says the Americans were making "incursions" into Sadr City and attempting to arrest the cleric's followers.
