SHERMAN, TX -- Austin College's IDEA Center was recognized by the U.S Green Building Council Friday.

Officials gathered on campus to celebrate the building's LEED Gold Certification at the IDEA Center.

The certification recognizes properties that make an effort in energy and water reduction and sustainable materials.

Officials with the U.S. Green Building Council say green buildings will benefit the campus and students for many years.

LEED Green Associate Executive Director Jonathan Kraatz said, "The utility bills are lower than they would be otherwise for water efficiency it's the same thing. Water is going to become a huge issue in our region and increasingly so over the next few years. The other piece of it is the indoor environment quality."

Austin College is one of 13 colleges in Texas to receive the award.
