BELLS, TX -- Former Bells Mayor Gary Martin resigned unexpectedly Thursday and gave no explanation.
The news leaves residents shocked and many of their questions unanswered.
Bells City Council member Kemal Tongate says, "He turned his keys in and his phone in and said he resigns his position as mayor effective immediately."
He gave no reason for stepping down, and Tongate says he doesn't know why.
"Nobody asked him and nobody pursued any reasons as to why."
Some residents of the small community question whether Martin's resignation may have had something to do with the city's ongoing water problems. The city has been under multiple boil orders in the last three months, and Wednesday classes at Bells ISD were cancelled after a water main burst.
For now, residents are only left to wonder why Martin stepped down.
Tongate says elected mayor pro tem, Angela LeBlanc will take over temporarily, and the council will soon decide whether to put the mayor's position on the ballot in May for voter's to decide.
News 12 reached out to Martin today, but he has not returned our calls.
