Blood drive raises supply during holidays

ARDMORE, OK - This holiday season donors are giving the gift of life. The Oklahoma City Thunder is sponsoring an Oklahoma Blood Institute drive and for good reason.

"This big emphasis is to help build back the blood supply from the holidays and make sure we go into new years with a good strong blood supply," said blood program consultant Tessa Green.

Green said OBI was closed Christmas Day and they plan to close on New Years Day as well. With a need of 700 units a day, that puts them 1400 units behind..

"The need for blood never takes a holiday so we try to collect extra beforehand, but everybody is so busy at Christmastime," Green said.

And now it's up to donors to roll up their sleeves for this pressing need.

"They're always calling me and telling me that they need blood donations so it makes me feel good when I do it," said blood donor Kenny Jordan.

Ardmore alone has a need of about 70 units of blood a day, and Friday they collected 92 units saving over 270 lives.

"it's my way of helping out," said Jordan.

Every donor received a Thunder t-shirt and a chance to win two lower level tickets to a game with a hotel stay. OBI will draw a name and call the winner Friday night. The OBI in Ardmore will be open until noon Saturday if you'd like to donate blood.
