Bonham assistant football coach arrested for DWI

FANNIN CO., TX - A Bonham Assistant football coach was jailed over the weekend for driving while intoxicated, and police say one of his passengers was the head football coach, who was cited for a misdemeanor crime.

Ector Police Chief J.D. Connerly tells News 12 they arrested Bonham assistant football coach Joshua Lehde for driving while intoxicated after he failed standard field sobriety tests early Sunday morning.

Chief Connerly says officers had probable cause to believe Lehde was intoxicated around 1:45 a.m.

Lehde was booked into the Fannin County Jail around 3:30 a.m.

Connerly says there were 4 other people in the vehicle, and one of the passengers was Bonham's head football coach Cody Bounds.

Bounds was given a citation for having an open container of alcohol.

Bonham ISD Superintendent Dr. Marvin Beaty released this statement:

"I am aware a member of our staff was detained by law enforcement over the weekend. However, being a personnel matter I cannot disclose details. We are in the process of investigating the matter and will take whatever action is in the best interest of our District."

Residents who spoke to News 12 say they're disappointed in the Assistant coach's actions and want him to take responsibility.

They also say they hope students use this example as a learning opportunity.

Chief Connerly says Ector PD had to obtain a warrant to take a blood sample form Lehde, and they're still waiting on official blood alcohol test results.
