TULSA, OK -- It was one year ago a Bryan County 12-year-old received nationwide attention for shooting an intruder after he broke into her home. Now, Kendra is being rewarded for her actions.

Tuesday, Kendra was awarded the Oklahoma 911 Hero of the Year award in Tulsa at the annual Oklahoma Public Safety Conference. She was applauded by safety professionals across the state.

Durant police officers have called Kendra an inspiration. Those who were on the scene that day said they are extremely proud of what she did.

In October 2012, Kendra was home for fall break when Stacy Jones broke into her Calera home.

Kendra was hiding in a closet with her mother's gun, and she says when he tried to get inside she shot it through the door hitting him in the shoulder.

Throughout the break-in, Kendra stayed on the phone with 911 dispatchers, and Bryan County law enforcement soon found Jones, wounded nearby.

Stacy Jones was found guilty of burglary in the first degree earlier this year. A judge sentenced him to 25 years and an additional 5 years probation.
