KILLEEN, Texas (AP) - A Central Texas officer killed in an exchange of gunfire at an apartment complex has been buried following a funeral service that drew thousands of mourners.

Robert Hornsby, a four-year veteran of the Killeen police force, was buried in that city Thursday. A service was held earlier at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center that was attended by police from across Texas who wore black bands across their badges.

His widow, Kimberly Hornsby, spoke of how his "love for people was unconditional and infectious."

The 32-year-old Hornsby died early Sunday morning after his police tactical team responded to the complex on complaints of a man threatening people at a pool.

Hornsby, the father of a 4-year-old and 1-year-old, was killed along with the gunman, a 24-year-old Fort Hood soldier.
