ATOKA, OK - A county commissioner accused of driving a county car while collecting a monthly travel allowance has agreed not to run for re-election. In exchange, all charges have been dropped.

Gilbert Wilson, 58, of Boswell, agreed to pay the county back for the truck.

"In exchange for his agreement not to run for re-election and to pay $6,200 in restitution, I agreed to drop the charges against him," special prosecutor Craig Ladd said.

Ladd said Atoka County had paid that amount for the used 2002 Ford F-150 pickup. The case had been set to go to trial on Monday.

Since 2007, Wilson has also been the county's emergency management director, a job which defense attorney Gerald Dennis said he does for free.

According to Dennis, the county bought the truck for the prior emergency director, who used it for a few months in 2006. Dennis said Wilson used it "some" over a three-year period until he was told that might not be acceptable.

"As the emergency management director of Atoka County, our position was he could drive the truck," Dennis said.

Ladd said Wilson's second role added an additional layer to the case.

"You have to consider what the complexities of the trial are going to be and I think that with all things considered, this was a smart way for the state to resolve the case," Ladd said.

Now after 15 years, Wilson will wrap up his time as commissioner in December.

"He wasn't going to run before this ever happened," Dennis said. "What they wanted him to do was resign. He told them he wasn't going to resign."
