BONHAM, TX -- What was the oldest original building in Bonham burned to the ground Saturday night into Sunday morning.
Firefighters are still trying to determine what sparked the blaze at McKelva - Morris Mattress: Bonham's mattress store since 1912.
"Heavy fire in the rear of the building in the warehouse and manufacturing area. The fire quickly spread to the showroom floor," Bonham Fire Dept. Lt. Chris Hughes said.
Tim Hall was working next door at Family Video when he saw police vehicles and fire trucks zip across his storefront around 11:30 p.m.
"I just looked out the window and they parked just across the intersection there and there were two cops that blocked off the road. Then I got a little curious and walked outside and saw all the flames," Hall said.
Hall took this video from the store parking lot.
Meanwhile, firefighters were having a tough time avoiding antique manufacturing machines and materials while fighting the fire.
"Due to the age of the building, and the contents of the building, it was a difficult fire to extinguish," Hughes said.
It took firefighters four hours to contain the flames, and Sunday afternoon, they were forced to return to the still smoky scene.
"Due to the amount of cotton and the material they're using to manufacture these mattresses, there is a lot of smoldering and it's a lot of extensive overhaul. We're having to get in here and pull it apart and continually wet it down," Hughes said.
Firefighters are still investigating the cause, but say it's not suspicious.
