Child dead, six injured in Bryan County accident involving alcohol

BRYAN COUNTY, OK -- A child is dead and six others are seriously injured after a rollover accident involving alcohol in Bokchito Sunday afternoon.

Around 3:45, a Durant police officer, on his way home from work, rolled up on the one-car accident off Rock Creek Road near Blue.

All seven people in the SUV, five being children, two adults, were ejected from the vehicle. None of them were wearing their seat belt.

Three of them were flown to Dallas area hospitals by helicopter. The other three transported by ambulances.

OHP Trooper Michael Green says the driver, Clyde Rual Powell, was drinking at the time of the accident and there were beers in the car.

News 12 talked to a man who lives down the road from the accident and helped victims before responders arrived.

"And this guy came running up without his shirt and blood on his face and side of his head and down his arm and chest, yelling, 'I need a phone,'" Jerry McWilliams, who assisted the accident victims, said.

"This is exactly what happens when you let somebody intoxicated drive. It's also what happens when you don't wear your seat belts. This is a bad crash. This is a real bad crash," Trooper Green said.

Green says alcohol caused the crash.

All seven people involved in the accident are from Durant.

Two passengers remain in critical condition.
