Cigarette Butts #1 littered item on US Roadways and Beaches

ARDMORE, OK--In observance of earth week the Ardmore Beautification Council wants to raise awareness on the issue of cigarette littering and the problems they are causing for the environment.

Executive Director Norma Paschall said that 176 million pounds of cigarette butts are littered every year in the United States.

According to a new study released today by Legacy, a public health non-profit organization, more than half of Americans surveyed did not know that cigarette butts are the number one littered item on U.S. roadways and beaches.

Experts say cigarette butts are toxic, costly to clean up, and not biodegradable. Those caught littering cigarette butts could face misdemeanor charges.

To report littering in Carter County call the Littering Hotline at (580) 221-7575. You can remain anonymous.
