SHERMAN, TX -Getting emergency alerts in Grayson County can now be as close as your fingertips. County public safety officials are now using a new app to alert anyone passing through the county of any potentially severe weather events.
Grayson County's CodeRED system notifies you of any severe weather events or warnings by calling your phone at home or at work. But what if you're on the go? Now, there's an app for that.
Grayson County Emergency Manager Sarah Somers said they have been looking for ways to relay weather warnings to people who might not be home to get the code red call.
"We have struggled with how do we provide information. How do we put emergency notification warnings in the hands of people who are just visiting Grayson County or passing through it," he said.
Bryan County resident Edward Phelps regularly passes through Grayson County to visit friends and family and he said he wants to know if he's about to drive into bad, or potentially dangerous, weather conditions.
"I don't want to drive into something that's gonna cause any problems, damage our vehicles or anything like that or get us hurt," he said.
On Thursday, the Grayson County Office of Emergency Management unveiled the CodeRED Mobile Alert app. It plots your location on a map and alerts you of any weather events in that region. With the new CodeRED app, not only will you get notifications from the area you're registered in, but also weather warnings from wherever you are in the nation.
"This is based on the location services in the particular app, wherever you're standing. So that way, we can push notifications to someone, they'd get that alert in their hand based on where they're standing with their iPhone or iPad," said Somers.
Somers said, even with the new app, she urges people to have more than one alert system.
"We encourage everyone to have multiple ways that they receive warnings. They get information from your station, they get information from weather radios, from the radio broadcasts and from our CodeRED alerts," she said.
Phelps said now he knows about the app, he'll download it.
"I think that would be wonderful being in this area to have that. Have that available to us because we have such dangerous storms especially in the spring and summer months," he said.
The CodeRED mobile alert app is not yet available for Android, but it is now available for iPhone and iPad for free.
