Collin Co. deputy, wife killed in Fannin Co. house fire

LADONIA, TX -- Authorities say a couple died in their Ladonia home early Sunday morning when it went up in flames. One of them is believed to be a local sheriff's deputy.

Collin County Sheriff Terry Box says his deputy Richard Fields was the man killed in that house fire. Box says Fields has been with the department for years and has done a lot for the community. Fields also ran for Fannin County Sheriff in the last election.

The Collin County Deputies Association released this statement on Facebook. They say they are "Sad to report that one of our members has passed away. Collin County Deputy Sheriff Richard Fields and his wife lost their lives in their home last night".

Sheriff Box also shared his grief.

"He was a great family person and a great friend to all. Everybody he came in contact with, he was a great friend and they all respect him a great deal," Sheriff Box said.

Before 2:00 Sunday morning, authorities say a two-story home off FM 2990" caught fire. George Robinson with the Fannin County Sheriff's Office says when they arrived on scene the house was fully engulfed.
Firefighters fought the blaze, but authorities say the home is a total loss.

Sheriff Donnie Foster says the bodies are being taken to the Collin County Medical Examiners office.

The Red Cross is assisting the family.

The State Fire Marshal and local authorities are investigating.
