COOKE COUNTY, TX -- It's an explosive topic across the nation - gun control. And on Monday, the Cooke County Commissioners joined the fight.

Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution by Leon Klement, encouraging the state legislature to protect Second Amendment rights.

"And even though this resolution has no legal teeth per-say, I think it expresses what we feel about how important we feel the Second Amendment is," Klement said.

They plan to deliver the resolution to the state capitol on Tuesday,
Klement said.

"Whatever law they can come up with protecting our Second Amendment rights," he said. "And we're supporting and encouraging them to do that."

Several Second Amendment bills are on the books for discussion - like the Second Amendment Preservation Act by Representative John Otto. The bill would prohibit enforcement of any federal restrictions passed by the U.S. Congress.

The commissioners passed the resolution because they say it embodies what the county believes - that gun rights should not be restricted.

"I think if you own a gun you should be able to have the gun. And if Obama tries to pass it, he should be impeached," said Gainesville resident Velma Blackstone.

And Gainesville resident Kyle Dodds agrees.

"I think it's just another freedom getting taken away from us. I believe we have the right to protect ourselves. And I believe that guns don't kill people, people kill people. And taking away guns takes away our freedom," he said.

County Judge John Roane said he believes in individual freedoms.

"The citizens of Cooke County are certainly for maintaining as many of our rights that have been given to us as possible."

Klement said none of his constituents that he talked to oppose the resolution. President Barack Obama is proposing a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.
