WHITESBORO, TX -- If you are at least 50 years old and looking for a fun way to get a good work out there is an exercise that will keep you on your toes right here in Texoma. Kristen Shanahan shows us how dozens of Texomans are dancing their way to better health.
Verlyn Baldwin took to the dance floor at the Whitesboro Senior Citizen's dance Friday night. Watching her move gracefully to the music you would probably never guess she is blind.
"I had 20/20 vision until I was 28 and I did just fun dancing not really knowing what I was doing, or have hadn't any classes," Baldwin said. "So having that experience in the past gave me some idea."
Baldwin says she cuts a rug at several Senior Citizen's dances and says it is not only a good way to keep fit, but a great way to meet friends.
Albert Brunson, President of the North Texas Senior Dance Club in Sherman, agrees.
"There's no smoking, no drinking, no profanity. Just a bunch of folks getting together for good friendship. It's excellent exercises," Brunson said.
Brunson and his dance partner Jimmie Cosper have been kicking up their heels for about 13 years now, and encourage other people to get out there and do the same.
"You don't have to be lonely and stay home all the time because you're never lonely when you're at a dance," Cosper said.
"Get up off the couch. Come down here and have a good time," Brunson said.
Members say anyone can learn how to boot scoot and boogie, and if you do not know how they will gladly teach you.
There are Senior Dance Clubs located all across Texoma. Dances are held at the Jimmie O' Rector Community Center www.whitesborotexas.com, as well as at the Sherman Municipal Ballroom. For more information you can call Brunson at 903-436-4778 or email him at danzprez@isp.com.
