DURANT, OKLAHOMA -- Earlier this month, a handful of Southeastern Oklahoma schools passed their school bonds. With that money they say they'll build libraries, classrooms, repair facilities and purchase transportation equipment.

Now, Durant ISD is asking residents to pass a similar school bond on March 5th.

"And it allows us to pay for things that we wouldn't otherwise be able to afford as a school district," Simeroth said.

Superintendent Dr. Jason Simeroth says some of the funding from the no-tax increase $5.8 million dollar bond would be spent on school safety.

He says they would enhance security at school entrances, put up fences around school playgrounds and add cameras.

"Security in our high school is just phenomenal; the cameras. But we want to make it exactly the same way in the rest of our district," Simeroth said.

He says the funding would also help maintain the district's fine arts programs, as well as pay for textbooks and technology; specifically their one-to-one program, which puts a laptop in the hands of every Durant middle schooler and high schooler.

"The initial funding for that was the bond that we passed three years ago. This will help us maintain; that's part of this bond issue is to help us maintain for all the kids coming in," Simeroth said.

Simeroth says 90% of the district's money from the state pays faculty and staff salaries, so they're relying on this school bond for supplemental support.
