Durant High School students simulate drunk driving

DURANT, OK-- As Austin Aguero drives us around in the simulated car around the Durant High School parking lot, he decides drinking and driving is something he never plans on doing.

"Nothing I've ever seen before. It was like something out of a nightmare. Everything was moving around and there was two of everything. And then when you drive, even when you turn, you don't turn. So it's scary," Aguero explains.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol along with the Choctaw Nation Injury Prevention, put on a program for the Southeastern Oklahoma high school. It's a unique drunk driving simulation car. Carey Lester, Choctaw Injury Prevention Coordinator, has a remote to switch it from "sober" driving to "drunk" driving.

"We take the kids out and the car here, it actually, you can do it in regular mode and impaired mode. Impaired mode has a delayed reaction to show the kids what it's like to be under the influence of alcohol."

According to teen driving statistics 60% of all teen deaths in car accidents are alcohol-related. Students said it's a wake up call.

"I drove and it's very different from when your driving when you're sober. You don't have complete control over what your doing. And you, like when you're driving in that, you're reaction time is totally different from when you're sober," said, 10th grader, Kindall Watkins.

"Everything was dizzy, there was two of everything," explained, 9th grader, Gavin Gray.

But the students we spoke with today all said they won't forget this because it can change your life in a second.
