Durant's 4th annual Shop with a Cop

DURANT, OK -- Christmas came a little early today for some Durant area children in need, and Santa came dressed in blue.

Nicolette Schleisman was there as Durant and Calera Police, along with OHP Troopers, took the kids christmas shopping Thursday morning for Shop with a Cop.

"If not for this, the only Christmas they would have would be from my parents. So it feels good to be able to wrap something and put from mom on it," said mother, Paula Young.

Parents like Paula Young brought their children to the Durant Walmart early Thursday morning.

But this was much more special than a typical trip to the store...As everyone went shopping together for the childrens' Christmas gifts.

"I feel great cause I get to shop with the cops and I get a bunch of presents," said Alex Childers, participant.

Alisha Childers and her son Alex suddenly found themselves in need this year, so they're participating in Shop with a Cop for the first time.

"I was real impressed that they're reaching out to help their own communities. It really helped us this year," said Childers.

About 40 volunteers took dozens of children around Walmart, watching, and often helping them pick out their Christmas gifts this year.

"A lot of people are going through hardships. You've got single moms that are trying to raise 3 children, 4 children. And we recognize that that's hard for her. And it gives us an opportunity to help and we love to do that," said John Wyatt, Shop with a Cop coordinator.

And moms like Childers are glad that Santa's elves in blue are helping them bring joy to their children this Christmas.

"Getting to see my kids happy is really all that matters to me and getting to see them have fun and know that there are people out there that will help them," said Childers.
