Fallin, city leaders to discuss anti-smoking plan

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Gov. Mary Fallin and community leaders from across the state are expected to unveil a plan to reduce smoking-related deaths in Oklahoma.

Tuesday's press conference comes one day after a bill supported by Fallin to allow cities to enact tougher smoking bans was voted down by a Senate committee.

Fallin will be joined by Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett, Ponca City Mayor Homer Nicholson and several health officials.

Fallin's Secretary of Health Dr. Terry Cline testified before the Senate panel in favor of the measure that would have allowed local municipalities to enact smoking bans that were stricter than current state law. Cline testified that smoking-related illnesses kill an estimated 6,000 Oklahomans each year and that about 26 percent of Oklahoma adults smoke.
