GAINESVILLE, TX -- The life of a former Gainesville police officer, who died in the line of duty, will forever be remembered thanks to his family.

Steven Fleming served the Gainesville Police Department for 22 years.

He was promoted to chief in 2008 and held that title until his death in November of last year.

In Fleming's honor, his family established a $1,000 scholarship at North Texas Central College.

It will go to a student majoring in Criminal Justice.

Flemming's wife says the scholarship is one way to turn a tragic event into a positive situation.
