Fireworks safety for the Fourth of July

LAMAR COUNTY, TX - Paris Fire Chief Larry Wright encourages people to celebrate Independence Day with a bang at any of the fireworks shows across Texoma, but he says fireworks are banned within the city limits of Paris and you can be ticketed just for possessing them.

"There is a misdemeanor fine if they're caught with possession of fireworks or shooting fireworks in the city." said Wright.

Stateline Fireworks owner Greg Withers' says all the recent rain has made for ideal conditions to set off fireworks and that means plenty of customers.

"The last few years have kind of been on us and we are very thankful, very blessed that we've had a very good start this season and hope it continues through." said Withers.

Fireworks can be used in Lamar County and although the conditions are the best they have been in years, sparks from fireworks can still easily ignite grass and vegetation.

"I always try to remind people to look during the daylight hours for over line wires because you're not going to be able see them real good at night." said Withers. "Try to think about the fall out and the sparks, where they might be fixing to go, just kind of using a little common sense."

"Lay them down and light them, don't handle the firecrackers or light the firecrackers and throw them." said Wright.

Always keep water close by.

"The good ole five gallon buckets, if you just leave two or three of them around half full, that will save you a lot of heartache." said Withers.

Chief Wright says he would prefer for people to leave fireworks to the professionals at the cities annual fireworks show.

Additional Safety Tips:

•Buy only legal fireworks
•Never try to make your own fireworks
•Always use fireworks outside and have a bucket of water and a hose nearby in case of accidents.
•Steer clear of others — fireworks have been known to backfire or shoot off in the wrong direction. Never throw or point fireworks at someone, even in jest.
•Point fireworks away from homes, and keep away from brush and leaves and flammable substances.
•Don't hold fireworks in your hand or have any part of your body over them while lighting.
•Soak all fireworks in a bucket of water before throwing them in the trash can.
