SHERMAN, TX-A former Dallas Cowboy visits Sherman Friday to pass the message to local business owners on how to keep striving for success.
Former Dallas Cowboy wide receiver, Drew Pearson, served as the keynote speaker for the Sherman Chamber of Commerce's annual awards ceremony Friday, to share with business owners the secrets to his successful transition from playing on a football team to owning one.
Hundreds of people gave a standing ovation to legendary Dallas Cowboys wide receiver, Drew Pearson, as he took the podium. He was the keynote speaker at the Sherman Chamber of Commerce's annual awards ceremony Friday morning. Event coordinator Lauren Bolin said they invited Pearson to the event to inspire business owners and it's also because it's the Chamber's 99th year in the city.
"We picked him because he's a Dallas Cowboy. He's from around here, we know people who know him, so it's just a lot of people in the community look up to him as a mentor and everything like that. He's a really good person all around," she said.
Pearson shared with the crowd the story of his career as a Dallas Cowboy, from eleven seasons playing under Tom Landry and three Superbowl appearances, to getting into the business world. He said running a business is a whole different ballgame.
"Business is a tough game. It's a tough game because the clock never stops running and the score changes from day to day. You're told 'no' more than you do, you have more setbacks, you have more losses. In football, you find out in three hours what your results are, whether you win or you lose," he said.
Pearson said networking helped a lot with his transition from athlete to businessman and it's an essential tool for anyone looking to promote their business.
"Basically, surrounding yourself with the right people. It worked for me in sports, it worked for me with the Dallas Cowboys, it worked for me in business, it works with family life, charitable life and all phases of your life. So if you want to be a success, surround yourself with successful people," he said.
Bolin said she hopes Texoma business owners took away some important lessons from Pearson.
"I hope that people learn a lot from him. Learn about how to be a good business leader, make good connections, a lot of friends, things like that," she said.
Drew Pearson owns the Allen Wranglers, a professional indoor football team based in Allen.
