Grayson Co. Sheriff's deputy killed in line of duty Saturday

GRAYSON COUNTY, TEXAS -- The Grayson County Sheriff's Office confirms that Deputy Chad Key was killed in the line of duty Saturday night.

Lt. Rickey Wheeler with the sheriff's office says Key was assisting other officers and directing traffic at the intersection of Highway 82 and Bethany Road around 10:30 p.m. when a suspected drunk driver failed to stop and struck him.

Key was transported to Texoma Medical Center and later died.

The suspected drunk driver was arrested and blood was drawn for alcohol and drug analysis. The driver has two previous convictions for DWI from 2002 and 2004 and was arrested for DWI again in August 2012.

DPS troopers and Texas Rangers are investigating the accident.

The Grayson County Sheriff's Office released this statement:

"On Saturday, April 20, 2013 the citizens of Grayson County lost a man that took an oath to protect and serve the citizens. The Grayson County Sheriff's Office lost a friend and a law enforcement brother and the Key family lost a beloved family member...

Deputy Key joined the Grayson County Sheriff's Office on November 16, 2009 as a Corrections Officer. Deputy Key was motivated to become a patrol deputy and put himself through the night academy at Grayson County College. He graduated from the North Texas Regional Police Academy in June of 2012 and was proud to carry the title of Deputy. On February 2, 2013 Chad’s dream came true and he was promoted to the Grayson County Enforcement Division as a Patrol Deputy. Deputy Key was in the phase two of his training; he had exceeded all expectations and was praised by his supervisors and fellow deputies....

Deputy Chad Key was a patrol deputy for 77 days before his death. Chad leaves behind a wife and three sons, ages 20, 10 and two months old.

The family will be setting up a fund for the boys at a local bank on Monday. We will make that information available when the account is opened.
