SHERMAN, TEXAS -- Grayson County Sheriff Keith Gary is speaking out about the Second Amendment, making citizens well aware of his stance on gun control.

Allison Harris sat down with him today for an exclusive interview about his feelings on the right to bear arms.

Sheriff Gary has released a statement announcing his take on the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

He says he felt the need to make the statement after several citizens approached him, asking him where he stands on gun control. His response is straight forward.

"No infringement whatsoever: I support the Second Amendment of the Constitution," Sheriff Keith Gary said.

Grayson County's sheriff of 17 years has released this statement, "[It] is the right of the people to keep and bear arms as embodied in the Second Amendment... This is one of the rights that our forefathers saw as inherent to a free people. I strongly support it... It goes without saying that neither I nor my deputies will take any action that infringes on the Second Amendment."

"You know, we care about our country. The sheriff's office here very much does so and we are going to abide strictly by the Second Amendment," Gary said.

Sheriff Gary showed News 12 his file of Grayson County applicants for federal firearms licenses. He signs off on a copy of the applications, keeping tabs on who possesses guns.

The sheriff says he would fight legislation infringing on the right to bear arms, including the right to bear assault rifles.

"Absolutely because, you know, what'll they do next? I mean, where do you start and where do you stop?" Gary said.

Sheriff Gary, himself, carries a glock with a magazine capacity of 11 rounds.

"Well, there's some concern about that. Is that too many? Well, I don't think so," Gary said.

We asked Texomans their thoughts on gun control.

"You know, a gun for hunting and a gun for protection is enough and I don't think there should be any assault weapons available," Texoma resident Martha Rivers said.

"The Second Amendment does not differentiate between automatic rifles and shotguns or deer rifles, so unless there's a clarification of that, in my opinion, it's still a violation of the Second Amendment," Texoma resident David Snapp said.

Sheriff Gary's full statement reads as follows:

"During my 17 years as sheriff of Grayson County, Texas, I have always worked to make sure that my office has respected the rights of people without regard to race, religion, or creed. Respect for the law, even by those in positions of government authority, is a hallmark of the rule of law and underpins our great democracy.

Among the rights of the people that deserve, and in fact demand respect by lawful authority, is the right of the people to keep and bear arms as embodied in the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution. This is one of the rights that our forefathers saw as inherent to a free people. I strongly support it.

Having laid out my position on the Constitution, law and order, and the right of the people to keep and bear arms, it goes without saying that neither I nor my deputies will take any action that infringes on the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution."
