Healdton animal shelter closed

HEALDTON, OK -- Residents in the town of Healdton claim a group of puppies died from exposure to freezing temperatures at the local shelter.

They say there are no heaters or air conditioning at the animal shelter and two garage doors are typically left cracked for fresh air.

Susie Shelton, a Healdton resident, says there are only concrete floors for the dogs to lie on.

"Even though they were nursing they just couldn't stay warm.", said Shelton.

"If there's been any lack of consideration for the dogs it's not going to happen again.", said City Manager Charlie Clark.

He says he was unaware of the problem before a town meeting last week and he says he's decided to close the shelter.

Now residents are scrambling to find homes for the animals.
