ARDMORE, OK-- A former Mercy Memorial Hospital employee is accused of stealing thousands of dollars from the facility over a period of two years. Ardmore police said while Lisa Smith was working as a cashier at Mercy Hospital, she took payment money from patients and used it for her own personal use.

Lisa K. Smith appeared in court on February 9th and is charged with felony embezzlement . Ardmore police said Smith embezzled more than $30,000 from Mercy Memorial Health Care between August 2009 through September 2011.

Police said Smith was dismissed from Mercy in September after being suspected of stealing from the hospitals gift shop. They said they found out even more was taken after an audit was conducted of all the accounts she had access to. When things didn't add up that is when Ardmore Police were called in for a criminal investigation.

Smith is currently released on her own recognizance and is expected back in court March 27th. If she is convicted she could face up to ten years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
