DENISON, TX-2011 was a year of extreme weather events, according to the National Weather Service. Thursday night, a representative from the agency stops by in Grayson county to train residents on how to be better prepared in case of severe weather.
Mark Fox of the National Weather Service said North Texas had a total of 44 tornadoes last year, more than double its average of 21 tornadoes. He also said 2012 may be another year for more severe weather.
Hundreds of people packed GCC's Center for Workplace Learning Auditorium Thursday night as emergency responders, storm spotters and residents attended the SkyWarn Severe Weather Program.
National Weather Service's Mark Fox, along with Grayson County emergency manager, Sarah Somers, explained which clues to look for that can suggest a tornado or thunderstorm and also ways to prepare, in case of a severe weather event.
"I never thought we'd see that again, but 2011, we had 500 people die because of tornadoes nationwide. We had a lot of tornadoes in this part of the woods and it looks like we're gonna have another active storm season again. So it's one of those things that you can't avoid, you just have to be ready for them," he said.
