A Bryan County judge found that a Durant man charged with killing his mother with a samurai sword in 2010 is not guilty, by reason of insanity.

The judge determined Ian Edmondson was not mentally capable to understand what he was doing at the time of the crime.

Edmondson was charged with first degree murder and cruelty to animals in the case.

Police say Edmondson stabbed his mother multiple times with the sword, before also stabbing the family dog.

Emily Redman, Bryan County district attorney, said Edmondson has been committed to a secure mental health facility.

She said a judge will evaluate him each year to determine if he is rehabilitated and no longer a threat to society.

"Usually in cases like Mr. Edmondson's, those types of individuals who've been found to be dangerous, who have committed crimes as atrocious as this crime was, will never be released," she said.
