DENISON, TX -- Dozens of people, like Stacy Landers, waited - some for hours to get free dental work offered by Lake Texoma Dental Care.
"We can't get our teeth out sometimes, we have bad teeth, or we need our teeth cleaned and without getting the right dental care, they just keep going bad," says patient, Stacy Landers.
It is that need, right here in Texoma, that led Dr. Steve McAnaney to start his free dental day.
"There are a lot of people that can't afford to go, so we decided to start doing this to give back to the community in the best way we know how," says Dr. Steve McAnaney.
Friday was the ninth semi-annual event, providing free dental care to hundreds of Grayson County residents in need.
Patients were allowed to choose between extractions or a cleaning.
Dr. McAnaney says dental care is the foundation for overall health, which is why he invites other healthcare providers to join him in giving back to the community.
This year, Grayson County Health Department and Heritage Park Surgical Center gave out free flu and pneumonia shots to waiting patients.
"We were able to buy enough of the vaccine, which is very expensive, to do something and this came along and it was an excellent way to reach the population that needs help," says Kendra Sikes of Heritage Park Surgical Center.
Dr. McAnaney and his staff donated close to $80,000 worth of care at the event and he says he hopes to increase that amount in the future to help more people like Landers.
"You don't have to be ashamed to come up and get some work done when you can't afford it, I mean, this is a hard time for people and you know, sometimes people need help. It's a good thing that people are out here like this, that have a heart to do something like this for us," says Landers.
